Build a Job Description Skills Checklist Before Applying

A vacancy lists several tools, responsibilities and personal qualities. You recognise some of them, but are unsure which experience belongs in your application.

Keep the purpose clear

Separate stated requirements from your assumptions. A checklist helps you find evidence for a skill and notice a gap without claiming experience you do not have.

Practise job description skills checklist with a small example

Create three columns: requirement, evidence and next action. Copy a short requirement in your own words, record one genuine example and identify what you still need to clarify.

What to avoid

Do not turn familiarity with a term into a claim of professional proficiency. Avoid including confidential employer data in a sample.

Check whether it helped

Can you connect each important requirement with an honest example or a clear learning action?

Make a brief record of the example, the action and the result. Note what remained unclear rather than forcing a positive conclusion. If you use the exercise at work, follow the organisation’s communication and access rules, and use a fictional or sanitised example when practising outside that setting.

Choose one adjustment for a second attempt. A clearer question, a smaller task or an additional piece of evidence can be more useful than repeating the entire exercise unchanged. Keep any claim about your skills proportionate to what you have actually done.
